HiWAAY Internet Services is proud to sponsor Kathleen A. Wells, Public
Policy Director for the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, in
the Women's Exchange Profiles 2004. The Women's Exchange Profiles showcase
outstanding women who are leaders in their respective communities and the
state of Alabama.
The Profiles are featured in a calendar, as well as on the Women's Exchange
Web site, www.womens-exchange.com. The Web site provides links to personal
information about these women, such as their paths to success, their
business philosophies and the things or people that inspire and motivate
them.
HiWAAY chose to sponsor Wells because of her unselfish contributions in
the area of domestic violence, the respect and admiration for her in the
community, and her commitment to her cause. A survivor of domestic abuse,
she has dedicated her life to helping other women overcome abuse.
Wells decided to actively participate in the battle against spousal abuse
in 1978 after hearing the founder of the Family Violence Center in
Birmingham speak of her work with pregnant women who had lost their babies to
domestic violence. With the help of a close friend, Wells decided to
establish a support program in her hometown of Decatur to educate and aid victims of
domestic violence.
In Huntsville, Wells joined forces with Hope Place, another organization
being formed to help such victims. She was elected to the Hope Place board
in 1984 and became the director in 1995. When Hope Place became a part of
Crisis Services of North Alabama in 1999, she became the director of that
organization.
Crisis Services of North Alabama, under Wells' direction, received the
Huntsville/ Madison County Chambers' Non-Profit Business of the Year Award
for 2003.
On Oct. 1, 2003, Wells became the new public policy director for the
Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Montgomery. The ACADV is made
up of 19 individual community-based programs that work with victims of domestic
violence and sexual assault. In this position, Wells will lobby for new
state laws to help victims and work in collaboration with representatives from state
and local agencies to make changes in administrative policies related to
domestic violence.
HiWAAY salutes Kathy Wells for the progress she has made and will continue
to make in helping victims of domestic violence. It is fitting that she
began her new position in October, which is National Domestic Violence
Awareness Month.
